In a bid to enhance food safety measures and promote awareness among consumers and traders, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated an extensive awareness campaign in collaboration with the Food Safety Department, Delhi. The campaign, which commenced on April 8, 2024, at renowned markets like Khan Market and INA Market in the national capital, aims to address critical issues surrounding pesticide residue and contaminants in food products.
Market associations and traders actively participated in the program, which shed light on the detrimental effects of pesticide residue, particularly in fruits and vegetables, and underscored the significance of regular testing. An integral component of the initiative is the introduction of FSSAI’s “Food Safety on Wheel” mobile lab, equipped with advanced rapid testing kits capable of detecting approximately 50 pesticide residues across various food items such as fruits, vegetables, milk, and cereals. These tests provide quick results, facilitating prompt actions to uphold food safety standards.
Traders were encouraged to utilise this mobile lab for expedited testing processes, ensuring the safety and quality of products available in the market. Additionally, they were briefed on the importance of obtaining FSSAI licenses or registration and adhering strictly to food safety standards. The campaign stressed the necessity of sourcing raw materials exclusively from FSSAI licensed or registered vendors to ensure traceability and compliance with regulations.
Moreover, the significance of raw material testing to guarantee the safety and quality of food products was emphasised during the program. Attendees were educated on the risks associated with artificial ripening and wax coating of fruits and vegetables using unapproved chemicals, while also being briefed on the benefits of organic farming practices. Information about the availability of testing laboratories for food products in Delhi and nearby areas was also shared.
The event highlighted the collective responsibility in ensuring food safety, echoing the mantra, “Food Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility.” It emphasised the pivotal role of every stakeholder across the food supply chain in fostering a healthier India. FSSAI, as the apex food regulator in the country, remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding public health through the implementation of robust food safety protocols nationwide.
