India’s food processing market witnessed a tremendous growth during the lockdown. This rise in consumption could be seen due to a considerable shift in buying patterns of consumers from basic necessities to stockpiling items like processed snacks, packaged meat and frozen desserts. In wake of this, not only has the demand of packaged food increased in India but globally too as the sector witnessed a hike of 27 per cent in overall food exports since March. The retailers too witnessed double digit spike in frozen food item category specially owning to the fear of hygiene. In fact, Modi government has launched PM Micro food processing Enterprises (PM FME) scheme to provide financial, technical and business support to upgrade existing micro-food processing units.
