Indian mutual fund industry AUM surges 33.11% to Rs. 52.74 lakh crore in Jan 2024: ICRA

Indian mutual fund industry witness growth. Net inflows surges by 983% on a y-o-y basis at Rs 1.23 lakh crore backed by investments into both equity and debt-oriented schemes

The net Assets Under Management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry rose 33.11% YoY at Rs 52.74 lakh crore in January 2024, as against Rs 39.62 lakh crore in January 2023. The surge in AUM is the highest rise since September 2021, when the year-on-year growth in AUM was 36.78%.

The Average Assets Under Management (AAUM) rose 29.62% on a year-on-year basis to Rs. 52.89 lakh crore in January 2024.

According to the ICRA Analytics, the industry witnessed net inflows of Rs. 1.23 lakh crore in Jan 2024 as against net outflows of Rs. 0.41 lakh crore in Dec 2023. On a year-on-year basis, net inflows into the industry surged 983% as against Rs 0.11 lakh crore in Jan 2023.

In January this year, net inflows into open-ended equity mutual funds increased by 28% MoM to reach Rs 0.22 lakh crore. Amongst open ended equity category, sectoral/thematic funds witnessed the highest net inflows of Rs. 4,805 crore followed by small-cap funds that attracted net investments of Rs. 3,257 crore. Flexi cap fund saw the maximum rise in net flows in percentage terms on a month-on-month basis in January 2024. Other than focused fund, all other open ended equity categories witnessed net inflows in January 2024.

In a turnaround, open-ended debt mutual funds experienced an inflow of Rs. 0.76 lakh crore in January 2024, marking a significant shift from Rs. 0.76 lakh crore outflow witnessed in December 2023. Liquid fund recorded the highest inflows at Rs. 0.49 lakh crore as against outflows of Rs. 0.40 lakh crore outflow recorded in December last year. Money market funds witnessed the second highest inflows at around Rs. 0.11 lakh crore. Out of the 16 debt funds, 11 fund categories received net inflows in January 2024.

Open-ended hybrid schemes saw net inflows of Rs 0.21 lakh crore, mainly due to an inflow of Rs. 0.11 lakh crore into arbitrage funds and 0.07 lakh crore into multi-asset allocation funds. No funds in hybrid category recorded net outflows in January 2024.

The SIP contribution hit a new record high in January 2024. The monthly contribution stood at Rs. 18,838 crore in January 2024 as against Rs. 17,610 crore in December 2023.

SIP AUM rose 3.12% in January to Rs. 10.26 lakh crore as against Rs 9.95 lakh crore in December 2023. The number of SIP accounts stood at the highest ever of 791.71 lakh in January, compared to 763.65 lakh in December. The number of new SIPs registered in January also attained a new milestone, with 51.84 lakh new registrations as against 40.33 lakh in December.

Mutual Fund folios reached an all-time high of 16,95,59,182 in January 2024. The same stood at 16,48,90,272 in December 2023.
