It is accepted by most business leaders, policymakers and informed citizens that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) drive economic growth in India. The country has seen policy changes over the decades that can be described as about turns in the jargon of political economy. India currently has over 63 million SMEs, which contribute around 36 per cent of India’s industrial output, 46 per cent of the country’s total exports and create 155 million jobs every year.
